The Complete Job Search Checklist
A complete, realistic checklist for a modern job search — from the first target sentence to withdrawing politely after an acceptance.
A job search has a lot of moving parts. A checklist does not make them disappear — it makes sure none of them depends on you remembering at the right moment.
Work through this in order. It is designed for a realistic search of a few focused hours per week.
Before you apply anywhere
- [ ] Write your target in one sentence: role, level, and the kind of company
- [ ] Update your resume for that target — one page, results and responsibilities, no exaggeration
- [ ] Prepare a base cover letter you customize per application in 10 minutes
- [ ] List 10–20 target companies you would genuinely like to join
- [ ] Set up one place to track every application
Weekly rhythm (15 minutes, same time every week)
- [ ] Update the status of every active application
- [ ] Send every follow-up that came due
- [ ] Check the target list: anything new to apply to?
- [ ] Ask one person in your network about their work or team
- [ ] Review the numbers: how many in, how many responses
For every application
- [ ] Tailor the resume headline and top bullets to the role
- [ ] Customize the first paragraph of the cover letter
- [ ] Apply through the best available channel (referral beats job board)
- [ ] Record it: date, company, role, source, status, follow-up date
- [ ] Set the follow-up reminder for 1–2 weeks out
When you get an interview
- [ ] Research the company: product, customers, recent news
- [ ] Prepare 5–6 stories using STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) — honest ones
- [ ] Prepare three questions that matter to you
- [ ] Confirm logistics: time, platform, who is on the call
- [ ] Interview; the same day, write down what was asked — you will reuse it
- [ ] Send a thank-you within 24 hours
Offer stage
- [ ] Get the full offer in writing before deciding anything
- [ ] Compare: salary, benefits, growth, commute, and how the team treats you in the process
- [ ] Ask clarifying questions — good employers expect them
- [ ] Decide on your own deadline; do not let an offer age indefinitely
- [ ] Withdraw politely from other active applications once you accept
The honest fine print
A checklist helps you run a search; it cannot promise results. Some searches take weeks, some take months, and external factors you do not control (budgets, hiring freezes, internal candidates) are real. What a system guarantees is different: you will know where every application stands, you will not lose opportunities to forgetfulness, and you will spend your energy where your pipeline says it matters.
Start with the free job application tracker — it covers the tracking column of this checklist with no email required. The Get Hired Action Kit contains the full version of every section here: the planning worksheets, interview prep, STAR builder and follow-up templates.
